Conflict Minerals

Nowadays, it is the mobile terminals are so popular with various sizes ranging from tabloid to smartphone. Many mineralsare in great demand because they are the essential to the opponents of those popular electronics. “Conflict minerals”, mostly in the eastern provinces ofthe Democratic Republic of the Congo, are mined in conditions of armed conflictand human rights abuses, located from populated areas in remote and dangerous regions. Blood Diamonds filmed by Leonardo DiCaprio, can well exemplify the phenomenon of the mining conditions in some African district.

Those minerals would pass through the hands of numerous middlemen as they are shipped out of Congo, through neighboring countries such as Rwanda or Burundi, to East Asian processing plants.

The US and the Securities and ExchangeCommission (SEC) passed a set of strict rules which require manufacturers toreport from where they get its tantalum, tin, gold or tungsten in an attempt curb the import of tainted minerals. However, there are critics who hold that the root of the conflict is left out by the regulations.

Newmont to sell noncore Nevada operation

US gold major Newmont Mining on Tuesday announced it had inked a letter of intent to sell its Midas operation, in Nevada, to Waterton Global Resource Management.
Newmont said the move to explore the sale of the operation was consistent with its strategy of strengthen its portfolio by divesting noncore assets.
“Waterton has established a presence in Nevada and is well positioned to enable Midas’s success over the long term by using its processing, and other assets, to support Waterton’s operations in Nevada,” Newmont VP for strategic development Randy Engelsaid.

"We are very excited to be working with Newmont to develop the full potential of both the Midas and Hollister operations. The completion of our acquisition of the Midas operation will add another high-quality gold mining operation to our portfolio of North American operations,” Waterton managing partner and chief investment officer Isser Elishis added.
The parties had agreed that the letter of intent would terminate on October 14, unless extended by mutual agreement, or earlier superseded by the acquisition agreement.
The proposed transaction is subject to customary closing conditions, including execution and delivery of an acquisition agreement, completion of confirmatory due diligence and receipt of all required regulatory and third party approvals.

When purchasing slurry pumps

You can save a lot of time if you know the following terms when purchasing slurry pumps. Here are some of most common terms that would come up during your buying process.
Head (H): A measure of the energy possessed by water at a given location in the water system
expressed in feet of head for centrifugal slurry pumps; (2) a measure of the pressure or force exerted by water expressed in feet.
Capacity (Q): A measure of the liquid volume capacity of a slurry pump.
NPSH:
Net Positive Suction Head Available (NPSHa): The NPSHa available to prevent cavitation of the pump. To calculate the NPSHa, you take the [Static Suction Head] plus [Suction Vessel Surface Pressure Head] minus [vapor pressure of your product] minus [friction losses in the suction piping, valves and fittings].
- Net Positive Suction Head Required (NPSHr): The NPSHr to stop a pump from cavitating. The NPSHr is generally supplied to you by the slurry pump manufacturer.
Efficiency: A ratio of total power output to the total power input, expressed as a percent.
Pressure: The force exerted on the walls of a pipe by a liquid. Normally measured in pounds per square inch (psi).
Viscosity: A measure of a liquid’s resistance to flow. Essentially it’s a how thick the liquid is. The viscosity determines the type of pump used, the speed it can run at, and with gear pumps, the internal clearances required.
Slurry Characteristics Parameters:
Concentration by weight (Cw): The concentration by weight reflects the percent ratio of the mass of dissolved solids to the total mass of the solution.
Concentration by volume (Cv): The concentration by weight reflects the percent ratio of the volume of dissolved solids to the total volume of the solution.
Specific Gravity (SG): The ratio of the weight of a given volume of liquid to pure water. Pumping heavy liquids (specific gravity greater than 1.0) will require more horsepower.
There are other parameters should be take into consideration such as particle size, pH and temperature, etc.
Suction head: Condition that occurs when the liquid source is above the centerline of the pump.
Suction lift: Condition that occurs when the liquid source is below the centerline of the pump.
Pump performance curve: A diagram provided to explain the relationship between the head and the flow rate of a slurry pump using various size impellers. The curve also includes efficiency, NPSH required, and horse power consumption as a function of flow.

cyclone feeding pumps

Excellence slurry pumps are widely used as cyclone feeding pumps. A cyclone is a device to classify, separate or sort particles in a liquid suspension based on the ratio of their centripetal force to fluid resistance.
A cyclone will normally have a cylindrical section at the top where liquid is being fed tangentially, and a conical base. The angle, and hence length of the conical section, plays a role in determining operating characteristics.

Canadian comet triggered the 'Big Freeze' 12,900 years ago: study

A comet that came crashing down over Canada roughly 12,900 years ago may have killed off the continent's megafauna and triggered a thousand years of global cooling, according to research by Professor Mukul Sharma of Darmouth University.
Sharma's work offers a new explanation of theYounger Dryas, or "Big Freeze" climactic period, which saw temperatures drop significantly around 13,000 years ago.
He and his team located concentrations of crystalline rocks, "formed by temperatures of 2,000 degrees Celsius," that Sharma thinks were the result of impact from an extraplanetary body, which led to the freeze:
"[The extraplanetary body] definitely came down in Quebec…just north of the St. Lawrence River," he told the Register.
The Younger Dryas is considered to have pushed humanity out of its hunter-gatherer stage and into agriculture. It's also cited as having killed off such North American megafauna as saber-tooth cats and giant camels.

Read more: Syncrude coker woes may crimp Canadian Oil Sands production target
The fix-it job on a major piece of machinery at Syncrude Canada Ltd. has wrapped up, but with it comes worries for the largest stakeholder in the oil sands consortium.
Canadian Oil Sands Ltd., which controls 36.74 per cent of the project, but does not serve as its operator, may be pinched after summer maintenance at one of its cokers took longer than expected. Cokers are key to upgrading bitumen and now Canadian Oil Sands is in danger of missing its production target.
The company has already lowered its production expectations twice this year. Canadian Oil Sands reduced its estimate for its share of Syncrude’s bitumen production to 100 to 104 million barrels for 2013, with a “single-point estimate” of 102 million barrels when it reported its second-quarter earnings in July. But now at least one analyst thinks even the low end of the company’s forecast is out of reach after repairs took 21 days longer than expected.
Phil Skolnick, an analyst at Cannacord Genuity, believes Canadian Oil Sands’ production in 2013 will come in at 98 million barrels. His estimate is based on Syncrude’s historical production: The project would have to operate at near-record rates in order to hit the company’s most recent target, he calculates.
Syncrude would have to average 325,000 barrels of bitumen per day in order for Canadian Oil Sands’ take to reach the low end of its guidance, Mr. Skolnick said in a note to clients.
“We feel this is unachievable,” he said. There have only been seven times since the beginning of 2010 that the project has met rates at or above this level, and never for more than two consecutive months, he said.
Syncrude was slated to perform maintenance on the coker in the second half of 2013, but instead started earlier because of unplanned maintenance outage at a related boiler unit. The so-called turnaround on the coker started June 10 and was expected to last 50 days, analysts at RBC Dominion Securities said.
They called the delay “slightly negative.” Canadian Oil Sands announced the return of its coker Tuesday evening.
The company did not address whether its production would be affected by the maintenance when it announced the coker’s return. Canadian Oil Sands did not return a call seeking comment. An Imperial Oil spokeswoman said her company does not provide production guidance, and Suncor Energy Inc. did not immediately return a call seeking comment. Imperial and Suncor are Syncrude’s next two largest investors.
Those companies, however, do not rely on Syncrude to the same degree as does Canadian Oil Sands. Syncrude, one of the country’s largest oil sands mining projects, is that company’s only asset.
Mr. Skolnick noted the company expects changes at one of Syncrude’s mines to improve the project’s operations. However, this is not enough to sway the analyst. “Given the extended turnaround and guidance decrease, we are taking a ‘show me’ stance on the matter.”

In bid to cut red tape, B.C. eases permit process for mining companies

Mining companies will be able to apply for exploration permits online for existing mine sites, as the B.C. government cuts red tape for the booming sector.
Natural Resources Minister Steve Thomson says low-impact activities such as exploration drilling and induced polarization, which uses an electrical current to measure deposits in the ground, can now be undertaken through the website FrontCounter BC.
Mining companies will have to give the province 30 days notice of the exploration work, for the information to be referred to area First Nations.
Companies will also be able to go online to extend the timing of previously approved exploration work up to two years.
Thomson says his ministry is reducing bureaucracy so that companies can create jobs more quickly.
Last year, mining companies spent $680-million on exploration in the province, and the Liberal government has committed to opening eight new mines and expanding nine existing mines over the next two years as part of its B.C. Jobs Plan.

Offtake partner prepays Canada Lithium $5m

Canadian lithium producer Canada Lithium Corp on Tuesday said it would receive a $5-million prepayment from Chinese offtake partner Tewoo-ERDC (Tianjin Products and Energy Resources Development).
The company said the prepayment would strengthen the Tewoo/Canada Lithium relationship as the two companies continued to advance their lithium carbonate business in China.
Canada Lithium and Tewoo were also in discussions about future prepayments based on further milestone achievements.
The funding from Tewoo would be used for working capital purposes as the company continued to commission the Québec Lithium project located near Val d'Or, Quebec.
At the end of August, the company announced a three-week suspension of commissioning activities at its process plant for maintenance and upgrades. Operations were scheduled to restart by mid-September, and the company would subsequently restart lithium carbonate shipments to Tewoo, in China, in October.
The project was still scheduled to complete commissioning and be at full production by the end of the first quarter of 2014.
Meanwhile, the Ontario Superior Court of Justice had on August 28 permitted a class-action lawsuit, initiated by Ontario-based Siskinds LLP against Canada Lithium for misrepresentation of mineral resources, to go to trial.
John Keyton and Hugh Latimer, on behalf of various shareholders, accused the lithium miner of supplying misleading information in an October 2010 resource statement and a January 2011 prospectus regarding the volume of mineralised ore and the grade of lithium at the company’s Quebec lithium project.
The plaintiffs were seeking the cancellation and refund of shares bought between October 28, 2010 and February 28, 2011 based on the resource statement.
The losses were allegedly the result of Canada Lithium’s March 2011 independent review of the mineral resource estimate for the lithium project, which identified geological modelling errors and led to a material reduction in the mineral resource estimate.
The company, along with deputy chairperson and CEO Peter Secker, president and COO Charles Taschereau, director and VP for explorations Mitchell Lavery and geologist Michelle Stone, who were also named in the lawsuit, would defend the allegations and denied that they would be proven at trial.
The company's stock gained 16.67% on Tuesday on the TSX, to change hands at C$0.45 apiece. The stock traded at about C$0.90 at the end of January.
